Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Idaho.

Habitat: Gravelly stream banks, rock crevices and talus slopes, sea level to subalpine.

Flowers: May-August

Description:
General:

Slender perennial from well-developed rhizomes, the 1-several stems 2.5-6 dm. tall, covered with long, whitish hairs that turn brownish when dry.

Leaves:

Leaves mostly basal, the blades cordate-oblong, 3-8 cm. broad and often longer than wide, appressed-hairy on both surfaces, shallowly lobed, the lobes broad; stipules with comb-like marginal hairs; cauline leaves 1-2, greatly reduced and bract-like.

Flowers:

Inflorescence large, many-flowered and open, the branches and pedicels filiform; calyx cup-shaped, 2-3 mm. long, the 5 lobes ovate-oblong, soft-hairy, 2/3 as long as the tubular portion; petals 5, white, 2-4 times as long as the sepals, with slender claws equal to the spatulate, entire blades; stamens 5, exserted.

Fruits:

Ovary mostly inferior; capsule 5-6 mm. long, the 2 carpels with short, slender beaks; seeds broadly oblong-ellipsoid, not curved, twice as long as broad, with prominent rows of spines.
